80-Year-Old Vet Makes Hundreds of Handmade Toys for Kids in Need

Jim Annis, a retired veteran, has given a bit of Christmas magic to needy children in the Sanford, NC area for over 50 years.

The 80-year-old makes handmade toys to give out to needy kids. "When the Salvation Army gives out food and clothes in our area, I give out my toys," Annis told WDTV. He wants to make sure that children in the area aren't forgotten about each Christmas, saying that as one of five kids growing up "it was hard to have a big Christmas."

Annis spends about $1,000 on wood and paint to carve dolls, cars, piggy banks and more, and says the only payment he receives is "the smile on a kid's face" when receiving a handmade toy. Annis says he'll continue to make around 300 toys each Christmas "until my toes curl up."
