Maren Morris spoke about life-changing decisions — including her life after divorce — in a conversation with actress and comedian Chelsea Handler

The Grammy-winning artist appeared as a guest on the latest episode of Handler’s weekly podcast, Dear Chelsea, and the pair caught up about Morris’ experience in the country music industry, her life after divorce, her new album and more. Morris cited “irreconcilable differences” when she filed for divorce from her ex-husband, fellow singer-songwriter Ryan Hurd, in October 2023. They reached a settlement in early 2024. Morris and Hurd tied the knot in March 2018 in Nashville, Tennessee. The “80s Mercedes” hitmaker has since confirmed she’s bisexual by writing in an Instagram caption last year that she’s “happy to be the B in LGBTQ+,” and wished everyone, “happy pride 🌈”

Morris shared during her conversation with Handler that she and Hurd are still neighbors and co-parent their son, Hayes Andrew Hurd, who turned 5 earlier this year. She explained that, while she doesn’t want to “sugarcoat” divorce, she can ultimately view the decision as a “success.”

Morris said “anything like divorce where it’s a failure of the promise and the plan that was made initially, but it’s also like a success — and I don’t want to sugarcoat it. It’s not fun to go through this, and also in a public way, have friends and family that you haven’t spoken to in years reaching out to you about something in TMZ that feels so private. But sh*t happens. It’s part of the job. I just think I’ve earned my stripes through that.

“Because we’re over a year out now, my ex and I, and we obviously have our son to co-parent, we get along now and moved past a lot of it,” she continued. “But we’re neighbors and I’m just so fortunate that we have put our son above each other’s sh*t and can truly — and it’s better for the two of us… I’m lucky that we love each other so much still and we have the highest respect. But also, there is that devastation that two people that love each other that much can’t make it work in the real world. It’s always gonna be multi-faceted, but I ultimately, think we both knew it was probably gonna be better this way, which is a success.”
